History

On April 13, 1868, a group of Welsh settlers were sent from Eckhart Church to start Mt. Zion Welsh Baptist Church in Frostburg with Reverend Lewis Llewellyn as their first pastor. At that time they purchased the present site from the late Nelson and Caroline Beall and built a small frame building in which they held weekly worship gatherings.

The church was rebuilt in 1935 in it’s present Gothic design using native sandstone. In 1954, the church was expanded, tripling the education facilities. There have been several renovations to the buildings since this time including major renovations in 1961, 1967, 1991, and 2010.

In August 2009, we called our current pastor, Thomas Winborn. Today, the staff and members of Welsh Baptist Church continue to support the vision of the church as God continues to add chapter after chapter to our continuing history.
